From the bus station, follow signs in English that point the way to the path winding along a stream, past many stalls and small shops selling Ohara's famous pickles, to the temple's massive front gate.

After meditation and contemplation in the garden, venture into the hall at the end of the corridor and try your hand with a calligraphy brush along with the Japanese visitors writing traditional prayers to the central Amida Buddha.

The view of the lush mossy landscaped garden from the verandah at the back of the building is one of Kyoto's most famous.

The Ojo Gokurakuin hall at the temple's center contains a magnificent seated Amida Buddha dating from 986 (and so revered that no photography is permitted).

The stamps at the various numbered stations throughout the complex are particularly elegant and make a fine and unusual souvenir of your visit.

      • Shugakuin Imperial Villa

This villa from the imperial period lies at the foot of the sacred Mount Hiei.

Shugakuin has spacious grounds that are a superb example of "strolling" gardens that were favored in the Edo period.

It construction was ordered by the shogun for an emperor who had abdicated in the 17th century.

Shugakuin comprises of three villas, each one with an airy teahouse in its garden. You will find the that the upper villa is the grandest of them, and it dominates with an imposing avenue make up of pines trees leading up to it.

      • Manshu-in Temple
Manshuin is a delightfully tranquil Tendai sect temple that dates from 1656. Maple and cherry trees stand on the fringe of an immaculately raked garden of sand and gravel.

      • Shisen-dō
Shisendo is a rustic hermitage with an adjacent karensansui (dry landscape garden) bordered by azaleas, maples and persimmon.

      • Ginkakujicho

Ginkakuji, the know as the famous "Silver Pavilion". It was original conceived to have a silver-leaf covering, but it never received it.

The place was constructed in the fifteenth century by Yoshimasa Ashikaga (an aesthete-mystic shogun) whose use for it was to host esoteric tea ceremonies where the highlight of the event was moon-watching from the elegant gardens.

If you see something that looks like Mt Fuji - it is actually a pile of white gravel that was left over from the construction - still it is a fun, possibly apocryphal story!

Ginkakujicho, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture 606-8402, Japan
      • 哲学の道
Philosopher's Path is found at the northern edge of Higashiyama and is one of Japan's most famous and delightful short walks; stretching along a canal running between two major temples—Nanzenji and Ginkakuji.
哲学の道 Jodoji Ishibashicho, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture 606-8406, Japan
      • Kofukuji

Often overlooked by visitors, but worth a visit: Kompukuji is a dry landscape garden with a steep bank of azaleas, this temple is affiliated with the Rinzai school of Zen, but also has literary associations with two of Japan's greatest haiku master: Basho and Buson.

      • Jukoin
Here in the Juko-In monastery is where Sen no Rikyu, the founder of the tea ceremony and its most celebrated master, is buried.

His death in 1591 by seppuku (the ritual disemboweling more crudely known to Westerners as harakiri) was in fact commanded by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, his former friend and patron.

Rikyu apparently incurred the warlord's wrath by placing a statue of himself in the large main gate, under which Hideyoshi would have had to pass—an intolerable affront to a famously proud warrior.

      • Daitokuji Sanshu Temple
This vast complex of 22 sub-temples and affiliated monasteries (down from about 60 during the Edo period) was built, burned down, and rebuilt between the 14th and 17th centuries.

It is richly endowed with artistic treasures and some of Japan's most superb Zen gardens, reflecting its history as a renowned center of calligraphy, gardening, tea ceremony, and other relined arts.

Four of Daitokuji's Zen sub-temples in particular offer superb gardens, teahouses, and artifacts.

Daisen-in, the "Zen Temple without Equal," contains splendid painted fusuma (sliding panels) and wall paintings. Zuiho-in is a monastery whose curious gardens combine Zen Buddhist and Christian symbolism, together with both an attractive rock garden and an unusually geometric tea garden.

Ryugen-in has five distinct rock gardens, one of which is apparently the smallest in Japan.

      • Zenrinji(Eikan-do)

The Etkan do is an exquisite temple set against the hillside. Its beautiful Amida Buddha statue is, unusually turning to look back over its shoulder.

Its strange posture commemorates a legendary statue that came to life and then berated Eikan, the astonished monk looking on for pausing from his ritual chanting.

Every autumn you can see special night illuminations of the flaming red and orange of the maple trees, highlighted by spotlight.

The effect can only be described as sublime and exceptional.

      • Kyoto Imperial Palace

The present buildings are a 1800s reconstruction; the original 8th-century Imperial Palace was destroyed in one of Kyoto's fires which ravaged the previous buildings.

As you pass through the Seishomon Gate on the western side you will enter the Shishinden ceremonial hall. Here emperors are enthroned this is a privilege retained by the city of Kyoto even after the move to Tokyo, and it is where New Year's audiences are also held.
