• Zenrinji(Eikan-do)

  The Etkan do is an exquisite temple set against the hillside. Its beautiful Amida Buddha statue is, unusually turning to look back over its shoulder.
  
  Its strange posture commemorates a legendary statue that came to life and then berated Eikan, the astonished monk looking on for pausing from his ritual chanting.
  
  Every autumn you can see special night illuminations of the flaming red and orange of the maple trees, highlighted by spotlight.

  The effect can only be described as sublime and exceptional.

• Nanzen-ji Temple

  Nanzenji was a 13th-century palace which contains 12 temples and monasteries.
  
  The impressive main entrance was constructed in 1628. There is a notorious local story where a robber known as Goemon lshikawa was boiled alive at this site in an huge iron cauldron.  In order to save his son he held him aloft to keep him from suffering the same fate.
  
  Since then, old-fashioned Japanese iron bathtubs have been gruesomely known as “goemon-buro."

• Heian Shrine

  A huge arch (torii) spanning the main road marks the approach to the Heian Shrine. This popular shrine features a strongly Chinese-influenced design and an extensive landscaped garden considered one of Kyoto's finest, with numerous cherry trees and a large pond with an elegant pagoda linked to the shore by a covered bridge.

• 哲学の道

  Philosopher's Path is found at the northern edge of Higashiyama and is one of Japan's most famous and delightful short walks; stretching along a canal running between two major temples—Nanzenji and Ginkakuji.

• Ginkakujicho

  Ginkakuji, the know as the famous "Silver Pavilion". It was original conceived to have a silver-leaf covering, but it never received it.  
  
  The place was constructed in the fifteenth century by Yoshimasa Ashikaga (an aesthete-mystic shogun) whose use for it was to host esoteric tea ceremonies where the highlight of the event was moon-watching from the elegant gardens.
  
  If you see something that looks like Mt Fuji - it is actually a pile of white gravel that was left over from the construction - still it is a fun, possibly apocryphal story!

• Chion-in

  The massive Chioninji is home to the Jodo ("Pure Land") Buddhist sect, which in the 12th century spread the appeal of Buddhism to the uneducated classes.
  
  Looming to an imposing height of 24 m (79 ft), its entrance gate is thought to be the largest structure of its kind in the world. The ringing of Chioninji's bell. Japan's largest and best known, is televised nationally when resident monks usher in the New Year.

• Maruyama Park

  Maruyama Park is located in the north-eastern part of Gion, and is a popular recreation area. It is nearby 2 visit-worthy temples; the Chion-in and the Heian Shrine.

  In the vicinity are two museums that reflect Kyoto's extensive history as a magnet for Japan's finest craftsmen; the Museum of Traditional Industry and then National Museum of Modern Art.

• Gionmachi Kitagawa

  Higashiyama's Gion district is Kyoto's main historical center of traditional theater, arts, and (now) antiques. It is also known as the last training center for geishas. 
  
  This is the place to wander and soak up the sights and sounds of Kyoto's lone quarter still dedicated to traditional arts and entertainment. Your curiosity and patience will inevitably reward you with a glimpse of a genuine geisha or maiko (apprentice geisha), the copious layers of her opulent—and unimaginably heavy—silk kimono rustling as she hurries to an appointment or a training session.

  Spring time, before April, this temple looked absolutely beautiful. Rooms included many paintings with English background info and statues and relics also had English infos. This place closed at 5pm but last customers were taken in at 4pm. I recommend coming here just few hours before sunset so the light will make this place even more peaceful.

  This was one of the top three shrines/temples that I visited in Kyoto (I visited about a dozen or more). During the fall the foliage here is amazing, very picturesque for the photo-inclined. Moderately crowded. It has the best dessert place inside a temple that I've visited (the chairs are adorned with a red-colored cloth and 5-6 kinds of traditional sweets are offered along with tea. A great setting to enjoy them in!

  Really great spot. As everyone says there are ample photo chances. The area itself is very large and there is a wonderful view of Kyoto. It's not super crowded so that's good. Getting there is pretty easy as well it's about 10 minutes from the subway. Fees are low and overall a relaxing experience.

  When thinking of traditional Japan and older times this temple really brings you as close as one can get. Beautiful year round but can be crowded especially during autumn when the leaves are at their peak.

  The best temple in Kyoto, hands down. Not too busy, stunning scenery and real-life ceremonies that are amazing to behold. Entrance fees are ¥600 for adults but the money is really well spent. The No 5 bus runs very close by and takes you straight into Kyoto City Centre
