Trier is Germany's oldest town, founded in or before 16 BC. Located astride the Mosel River about six miles from the Luxembourg border, Trier is little known to most tourists who vacation in Europe, but it should be one of Germany’s most visited cities. One motto says, “Before Rome, there was Trier.” It is home to the most Roman ruins north of the Alps. It served as a major Roman Empire capital, and the headquarters for the court of six different emperors.

Trier is a pedestrian friendly place. In Trier while we walked just 2,000 steps, we witnessed and enjoyed 2,000 years of history. Most of the beautiful landmarks can be found by walking along the Hauptmarkt. The Porta Nigra is the imposing gate found at the northern edge of the city. It dates back to the 2nd century AD. Other Roman ruins that are worth a look are the Amphitheatre, and the Kaiserthermen (Roman Baths).

If churches are your cup of tea, visit the Romenesque cathedral which is off of the Hauptmarkt. There is also the Constantin basilica and Palais der Kurfursten which has a beautiful garden area to sit and relax in.

In Chrismastime Trier is home to one of the most well known Christmas markts. The setting is mid-evil, and the smells of the Glueh-wine mixed with the roasted chestnuts is like none other.

Take the local road train around the town center to take in an overall view of this beautiful area.

    • Echternach
Echternach is a picturesque small city on the border with Germany, dating back to 698 AD, which makes it the oldest city in Luxemburg. One interesting sight is the St. Willibrord Basilica, which is surrounded by a secondary/high school. The school used to be an abbey founded by the Irish monk St. Willibrord, who also founded the city. The small prehistoric museum is worth a visit too.

There is also the famous "Sprang Prozessioun", which is a dancing procession held each Whit Sunday. It is possible that the procession might be added onto the UNESCO list as a Cultural Heritage of Mankind.

Locals and visitors alike enjoy taking strolls along the Sauer river which runs through Echternach. But it could be the starting points of more serious hikes too. To "Little Switzerland" for example. There are also a number of prehistoric and Roman sights and rock formations worth looking up in the area, on both banks of the Sauer. Another day trip destination is the lake, where you can visit the remains of a Roman villa.

    • Luxembourg City

This tiny corner of Europe is romantic, traditional, vibrant and quite exceptionally rich. Upon a close look you will realise that not everyone living in Luxembourg is living this often expected exceptionally rich life. With a population of less than half a million people, a spattering of the three offical languages of Luxembourgish, French and German and many others in the streets, a modernity bought in by prominence in international banking and the European Union quarter, as well ass dramatic natural sites, it might be petite, but it’s far from dull.

Luxembourg City – not only the capital, but also the only city of any real note – is a striking hillside town where pointed towers pierce the skyline and cobbled streets drift through the ancient architecture, oozing fairy tale romance. The aged, overhanging promenade is touted as ‘Europe’s most beautiful balcony’, and – with views over most of the city – would make a perfect candlelit scene in a Beauty and the Beast remake. You can feed each other snails and Crémant whilst staring at the old-world turrets and temples, or scramble across picturesque bridges and make your way into the lush green hills. In the summer, Luxembourg City even hosts open air cinema screenings alongside the al fresco dining, where you might just overhear international businessmen.

Considering its pint-sized dimensions, Luxembourg has an impressive amount to offer besides its main city, too. The town of Esch-sur-Sûre, for example, each consist of pastel houses bending along the edges of a peaceful countryside river bend, and wow visitors with their tiny coffee shops serving drinks on delicate old-world china. Then there are the hiking routes around rocky ‘little Switzerland’ - the district of Müllerthal – and the glittering lights glancing off the surreal Castle of Vianden. Moselle Valley’s wineries and their uniquely local wines are another major draw, not to mention the expansive tasting sessions that accompany the vineyard tours.

Wedged between France, Germany and Belgium, Luxembourg is often overlooked as a European destination. It is sometimes frighteningly expensive, but get past the cash flow problems and you’ll meet with a country so quaint and tinged with aging romance that you’ll struggle to leave. Even when parting would only take half an hour.

When in AD 963, Count Siegfried built his "Lucilinburhuc" (little castle) on a rocky promontory overlooking the river Alzette, little did he know that his home was to become the cradle of one of the smallest, yet one of the richest countries in the world.

Not even big enough on most maps of Europe to contain the letters of its name, Lilliputian Luxembourg makes up in snazz what it lacks in size. It has a wealth of verdant landscapes crisscrossed by rivers and dotted with the sort of rural hamlets that most people associate with fairy tales.
