      • New Braunfels
New Braunfels is a German settlement town that has kept many German traditions and festivals close to its heart. There Octoberfest brings people from all over the US. It has been a staple in New Braunfels for decades and the clothes are traditional.

New Braunfels is also the home to 3 German bakeries that are simply delightful and after one visit you will be returning. The restaurants are a little plain, there are two German restaurants, 2 barbque (they are ok but very popular), and the standard American chain style restaurants thrown in.

There is a large outlet mall for those who feel the need to shop. The Schlitterbahn is one of the largest water parks in the US and has something for all ages. Across the street is the water shute, you rent tubes and go to the far end of the input area, jump in the water preferably on your tube. The water speeds up and shoots you through a cement tube, lots of fun.

The there is the well known river tubing on the Comal or Guadalupe rivers. A 3 hour river tour ends up taking all day! You can tube, kayak or raft, there is camping along the river and it is a huge summer activity in these parts. Tubing can be a party-filled experience with many people bring ample cooler space filled with their favorite adult beverage. If you go tubing take a couple bags of large marshmellows, when things get quiet and slow people around you will open the marshmellows, soak them in water and then start throwing them at each other. It is great messy fun that turns the water white and drive the fish to the surface for the food.

New Braunfels is a nice town and a good place to get supplies. It is on the state road 46 that is perfect for I 10 traffic that dont want to drive through that crazy San Antonio. State road 46 is a pleasant drive through the country from Seguin to Boern with no traffic problems.

      • Austin
A bustling city that manages to give the impression of a tight-knit small town, the ever growing and heat-ridden Texan centre of Austin lives by the motto ‘Keep Austin Weird’, an off-hand salute to the anti-conservative outlook of this increasingly trendy and non-conformist town.

Austin also dubs itself the ‘Music Capital of the World’, finding a sweet harmony through its impressively mixed race background and love of the alternative lifestyle. There’s a vibrant and welcoming mix of nightlife to delve into, encompassing everything from a prominent gay scene to ample annual festivals and parades. You can explore the backdrop at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, which takes you through several angles on the diverse background of the southern state, while the ‘Austin bats’ provide a more unique natural experience, in which you can ride a boat to under the ‘bat bridge’ in the early evening and watch endless streams of the flying rodents stream over your head and off into the night.

Another quirky draw is the city’s ‘duck vehicles’, which cruise the roads and lakes of the town on a thorough tour, driving directly from the city streets into the neighboring lake for a quick drift around along the way. You’ll see that center fluctuates between an enticing take on the Internet age to the still run-down but strangely enticing suburbs that crop up in between the newfound and much loved designer apartments. Of course, that heavy Texan accent and the overwhelming influence of the University of Texas won’t go unnoticed, either.

You’ll do well to stumble across a more laid-back city, or one with more of a focus on happiness above wealth. Austin has a fun loving take on life, one that sucks in visitors and even new residents by the bucket load, and it’s the atmosphere that makes an already intriguing city more attractive even than it seems on paper. Hunt down the new Janis Joplin in a cowboy bar somewhere, sup a few pints and take in the natural spring water pools in the morning as a perfect hangover cure. Cheers!
