While traditionally Bodrum was the site of the ancient city of Halicarnassus, and home to the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World—that was tragically destroyed by an earthquake in the Middle Ages, today it is known for being one of the most friendly resort towns in Turkey, and one of the best places to experience the Aegean Sea. From the marina packed with private sailing vessels to Bodrum Castle looking out over the sea itself to the windmills or the amphitheater, this is prime adventure territory, and gives access to a wide variety of activities for the seasoned traveler.

Bodrum is not a beach destination, despite being along the coast. However, the town acts as a central hub for a wide variety of sea-and-coastal-based activities for the surrounding region. The scuba diving around Bodrum is some of the best in the world, and the surrounding seaside is a treasure-trove of ancient shipwrecks that are perfect for archaeologists and otherwise, since this was once a major hub on the ancient sea routes. However, if you are not into diving, relaxing on the open water or windsurfing, then the nightlife of the city might provide you with exactly what you need.

From the Turkish baths to the mud baths to the legendary open markets that line the streets, Bodrum is an absolutely amazing experience. Visitors should also check out the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, which is a major draw for visitors interested in that branch of archaeology, or if you just happen to be interested in ancient sea-based cultures. The open market, however, is probably the most striking feature of Bodrum. Remember one thing, and one thing only, if you come to this town: haggling is a must. This is a great place to pick up designer clothing and real leather jackets for a steal of a price if you are a master of the art. Add to that the legendary Turkish cuisine available in the restaurants and resorts and you have an absolutely perfect trip already laid out for you.

When it comes to offering access to some of the most ancient history in the world, Greece seems to have it all. In fact, anywhere you go in Greece you are surrounded by mythology, ancient history, ancient technology, and some of the most brilliant minds to have ever been born. The island of Kos is another of the many Greek regions to offer visitors the chance to experience some of the unique Greek culture and history that has been handed down over the generations. On top of that, the island itself contains a variety of geography from for plains to mountainous highlands, and is only four kilometers out from the coast of Bodrum, Turkey, making for a perfect day trip if you are staying in the resort town.

As an island in the Aegean Sea, Kos is actually part of a chain of mountains which were separated by earthquakes in ancient times. As such, there has been a wide variety of fossil remains found, and the mountains themselves are a popular hiking destination for tourists. Beyond the hiking, however, are the pristine beaches stretching along the 112 kilometers of coastline along the Aegean, although the island's major claim to fame is the ancient home of Hippocrates, who is considered the father of modern medicine, who both lived and practiced medicine here.

While Kos is a major tourist destination, and your first glimpse of the island will be that touristy sheen that covers such places, once you get beyond the outer rim into the inner parts of the island it’s almost as though you're entering a different world. From the Plane Tree of Hippocrates to the ruins of Asklepieion to the 14th century castle and the mountains and beaches that cover the island, there is more than enough to keep you busy for several days if you truly want to experience everything the island has to offer.
