While there is certainly a lot to be said about North Carolina, such as the warmth of its people, the beauty of the state, and the various cities boasting national history such as Charlotte, Raleigh, and Cary, its sister state, South Carolina, boasts just as much sights and sounds for the wayward traveler, and definitely has a more Southern feel to it than its northern counterpart. Once of the Province of Carolina which was one of the original 13 colonies that broke away from the British crown during the American Revolution, South Carolina was also a founding member of the Confederate States of America. As such, it boasts a deep Southern heritage and some racial and cultural issues which haven’t quite faded, despite the length of time since the Civil War.

South Carolina is a broad landscape of opportunities. The eastern portion of the state is largely coastal, and boasts such areas as Myrtle Beach, also known as the Golf Capital World. Meanwhile, Pawleys Island offers visitors a first-hand look at historic plantations, and Edisto Island is a haven of moss-covered oaks, pristinely- untouched beaches, and natural beauty just 45 minutes out from Charleston.

If visiting plantations and experiencing the Southern culture is on your agenda, then South Carolina is one of the best places to do so. From places like Charleston to Georgetown, to the capital city of Columbia, South Carolina can almost seem as though it is a portal back to another time in American history. The beauty of the Sand Hills, the Blue Ridge Mountains, the marshlands, the beaches, and the various state parks and swamps combine for a rich and heady mixture that, when thrown in with the southern BBQ and sweet tea and Southern accents, make for an absolutely perfect trip into a portion of the country that is vastly different from almost anywhere else. Whether it’s plantations, beaches, the food, the countryside, or the people, South Carolina has everything you need for the perfect trip.
