Positano is a picturesque resort town on Italy's Amalfi Coast. A nearly vertical town, Positano spills down from the cornice like a waterfall of pink, cream and yellow villas. The oldest houses are in the upper part. Daytrippers may walk down to the sea, only the alpinists among them make it back up (fortunately, there is regular bus service to take you back to the top). The descent ends at Marina Grand, a pebbled beach used by fishing boats. From here you can take a boat to inlets inaccessible by land or take a ferry back to Sorrento or Capri. Marina Grand is lined with bars and restaurants.

By the harbour artists sit with their easels painting this amazing town. Exclusive and fashionable, few places are as picturesque as Positano. The center of the town is a pedestrianized maze of cobbled alleyways and steps leading to chic boutiques and craft shops, famous for their bright patterned textiles. The church of Santa Maria Assunta, with it's traditional colorful dome, is a focal point of the town.

    • Sorrento
At first glance, Sorrento is nothing more than a typical tourist town sitting atop striking cliffs looking out over the Bay of Naples towards Mount Vesuvius and packed with dozens of English and American styled pubs that just reek of mass tourism. However, the views over the bay and the surrounding region of hilly countryside are unparalleled. The Amalfi Coastline is comprised of gently rolling hills and looming cliffs, and with such close access to places like Pompeii or the island of Capri it's easy to see just how Sorrento has remained such a prominent traveler’s destination for years. If you can get past the touristy facade there is definitely more than meets the eye, but it takes a bit of digging to get to.

Lacking any beaches, Sorrento is definitely not a Mediterranean destination if fun in the sun is your thing. However, if epic views and centuries of history mixed in with a little bit of mythology and topped off with some of the best Italian food and wine in the country is your thing, then you've come to the right place. Between the various terraces, the Roman ruins of Villa Pollio, the archaeological Museum of the Sorrentine Peninsula, or the Duomo Cathedral, Sorrento has plenty of architecture and history beneath the shining exterior. However, it is the picturesque quality of the town itself that makes this such a pleasurable place to spend some time, and for all intents and purposes Sorrento could easily be described as the perfect postmark Italian destination on the Mediterranean coast.

This is easily one of the most beautiful towns on the planet, and definitely one of the better places to experience Italy away from the massive crowds at most of the major destinations. Still, it does take a little bit of extra effort to get the most out of a trip here, but getting beyond the touristy glam of it all is well worth it.

    • Amalfi
Amalfi lies at the mouth of a deep ravine at the foot of Monte Cerrasto. It is the main town on one of the most beautiful and celebrated areas in the world: the Amalfi Coast (Costiera Amalfitana).

The Amalfi coast stretches for less than fifty miles along the beautiful, warm, inviting shores of the Mediterranean Ocean, but in these few miles are packed more beauty, more history and more romance than almost anywhere else on earth. It is said that the Amalfi coast of Italy was once the romantic hideaway of the ancient gods themselves, and it is easy to understand why.

Majestic, beautiful cliffs tumble into the blue sea with towns and villages perched along their sides, clinging to them as if by magic. This tiny stretch of coastline seems to be part of its own, wondrous world, quite separate from the cares and stresses of the real world. Along the Amalfi coast, there are no clocks; there is only the gentle rhythm of the sea to keep time. In fact, time seems to stand still while you immerse yourself in the gentle pulse of this special place.

    • Pompeii
Formerly a great Roman city, Pompeii is now a byword for disaster, having been buried under the weight of lava from Mount Vesuvius in the 1st century, wiping the city off the face of the earth. For the Romans, the burial of Pompeii was an epic event, and one of the greatest tragedies of their long rule. For the modern day tourist, though, the preservation of the city in ash for all those years means Pompeii is now one of the best surviving examples of what a Roman city would have been like, and a genuinely unique draw.

The entire town is a museum, and in it you’ll find far more than the bare bones of the city have been kept impressively intact. Walking through Pompeii you’ll find all the details still on show, from the solidified bodies of those who couldn’t escape the eruption to household scenes so natural you can almost imagine the meal on the table alongside the pottery that still is.

The detail is overwhelming, but Pompeii is impressive in scale, too. You’ll uncover all the traditional draws of a Roman city, from the Forum and the Theater to streets still marked with the ruts from heavy carts passing by, and a 1st century brothel with erotic imagery carved into the wall. There are several impressive homes, thought to have belonged to rich local merchants, and a huge basilica courthouse.

Pompeii is more than overwhelming enough in its own right, but if you’re a real history buff and can’t resist seeing the full extent of the local Roman heritage, you’ll find some of the more delicate relics have been transferred to neighboring Naples (you’ll want to be heading there, anyway), and there are a few other small villages around that were also well preserved by the volcanic activity.

There can hardly be a better insight into Roman life than Pompeii – no, not even Rome – and if you’re in the area it’s the one utterly unmissable tourist sight. It’s hot and dusty, but insightful, bizarre and utterly essential.
