Maryland is one of the most diverse states in the U.S., known for its range of elements such as mountains, forests, and plenty of coastal area. It has earned the nickname over the years of “America in Miniature” due to the fact that the state has a little bit of everything, all wrapped up into one area. The state is broken down into five regions that are distinctly different from one another, and depending on the Maryland you want to experience, depends on where you head for your vacation or exploration trip.

The capital region of the state is made up of mostly suburbs of Washington D.C., while the central region of the state holds Baltimore and Annapolis, two of the main cities. The eastern shore of the state is home to Chesapeake lowlands and the beach resort of Ocean City, while the southern section encompasses the Chesapeake Bay and all the historic background and natural beauty that go along with it. The western portions of the state are largely mountainous, with part of the Appalachian Trail running through it.

There are a wide variety of opportunities to experience in Maryland. The Appalachian Trail is known for being one of the best hiking trails in the nation, and the Assateague Island National Seashore is an amazing national park along the coast. Chesapeake Bay offers a unique look at some of the most beautiful coastlines in America, and is world- renowned for its bed and breakfasts and island communities. Although the Bay is a poignant look at what overfishing and pollution can do to a region, it is still the world’s third largest estuary, and simply stunning in scope.

Blue Crabs are par for the coarse when in the state, as they are fished from the Chesapeake Bay, and the food here is decidedly sea-oriented. There are also over 350 biotechnology firms in the state as well, giving yet another reason to explore the region.

    • Annapolis
Annapolis, Maryland USA is located on the west side of the Chesapeake Bay between the Severn River and the South River, almost center of the state, if the state was a square, which it is definitely not. Annapolis is a 30 minute drive south of Baltimore and a 45 minute drive east of Washington D.C. Annapolis is also only a 2 to 2-1/2 hour drive from the Atlantic Ocean to the east, or a 2 to 3 hour drive to the Blue Ridge or Appalachian Mountains to the northwest.

Annapolis was our country's capital when the Treaty of Paris, ending the Revolutionary War, was signed here. All four Maryland signers of the Declaration of Independence had impressive homes in Annapolis, which still stand today. Today, Annapolis has more of these original 18th Century structures still standing than any other city in the United States. Many are open to the public, where their beauty and architectural style is a major attraction.

Annapolis is also famous for being the home to the United States Naval Academy. The U.S. Naval Academy is open to visitors most days, but because this is a military base, you cannot drive into the academy. You can, however, park in the many parking garages downtown and take a short walk to the academy. All you need is a photo ID, such as a driver’s license or a passport, to enter the academy grounds to visit the many historical buildings and museums there.
