Users Assigned: KazmiA laidback, pint-sized southern capital that dates back to early colonial times (Hobart was only the second city to be built in Australia), Hobart rests in the shadow of Mount Wellington and on the banks of the impressive Derwent River. It’s a quiet, unassuming kind of place steeped in history, and – being situated on the island of Tasmania – an off the beaten track destination that most coast-bound Australian tourists just don’t make it to.
Part fishing port and part Georgian sandstone town, Hobart has plenty to offer the intrepid explorer, with sights that include the astonishing views from the peak of Mount Wellington, and Salamanca Place, a dated market where stallholders still blow glass amid the crowds and sell anything from paintings of the local landscape to home made art and craft products. Battery Point – named after the guns pointing to sea from the suburb in the early 18th century – is home to landscaped gardens and impressive stone architecture.
Being a fishing center, Hobart has an abundance of restaurants serving seafood treats, along with wines from nearby vineyards that you can visit to sample the ‘cold climate’ brews and explore the cellars, while simply sitting at the seafront and watching colorful sails drift past in the shimmering sunlight welcomes you to a relaxing side of Australia. This is a city that has a different outlook to many of the beer-swilling party heartlands you’ll stumble through on a more extensive trip.
Leave the city to tour Tasmania more extensively and you’ll find the tiny village of Richmond, half an hour from Hobart and home to a stunning stone bridge (Australia’s oldest) and a rustic old prison amongst the pretty, almost English style countryside.
Hobart is a far cry from a typical Australian destination: temperate and moderate, it highlights a more historic side of the country and offers a great break from the more typical Aussie destinations, as well as a great launch pad for exploring Tasmania more extensively.
