Apartamentos Xixerella
The many good reviews received for this Campsite are not wrong. Set halfway up a deep valley on the road to Pal village, it has a backdrop of beautiful pine covered mountainsides, and the constant sound of the nearby stream torrent that runs by the side of the camp.
It has 3 different accommodation zones: A large block with 16 apartments, 8 log cabins and a campsite field for 30 or more caravans, campers and tents.
Running up and down the valley is their 18 hole pitch & putt golf course. You need to have a licence to play.
The owners Mariebelle and her brother and their family are very friendly, she speaks Catalan, Spanish, French and passable English; and is more than willing to help out in any way and are greatly appreciated by visitors.
Visitors to the Park are mainly from Spain and France; but you often encounter other europeans like Brits, Dutch, Swedes and Germans. It is not on the "through road" from France to Spain; so will involve a bit (30mins) detour off the main road if you are passing: it is worth the trip up the North Valley.

Hotel Palarine
The Palarine Hotel/Bamboo Restaurant, is a welcoming place to stay and eat in Andorra. The hotel welcomes skiers, mostly from the UK & Ireland, and the restaurant/bar is hub of expat life.
Graham is the friendly manager/landord and together with his chinese wife Maria they expertly run the Palarine (and the bamboo restaurant).
The chinese food is excellent and unique in this part of the world - other chinese restaurants in the area (of which there are very few anyway) serve nothing like it. Well known and respected, locals come all the way from La Vella and La Massana to enjoy the food.
There is a "english pub" atmosphere to the place (without the cigarette smoke), as many of the local british expats tend to often congregate here. Big screen TVs play important sports games.

Hotel Montané
The Hotel Montané is a small, family run hotel that has the enviable position of being located directly in front of the lower gondola station for the Arinsal ski resort.
Fiona (originally from Scotland), and her family and friendly staff have operated this hotel for over 10 years. In the kitchen chef Jose, who is originally from the US, serves up good quality food that is known all over Andorra. People specially make the trip up to this end of the north valley to enjoy dining here.

Centre Comercial Illa Carlemany
Huge lilac monstrosity in the centre of town. Check. Badly planned parking entrance route that blocks up through traffic. Check. Expensive to park in interior car park. Check.
So it's terrible? Er, actually no - Andorra's only real "shopping mall" is actually a very pleasant experience. It's not so big, it is very centrally placed, because it's indoor it is something to do on a cold and blustery day, and there are plently of different types of shops and activities inside.
Some local geography for you.. It is located on the border of Andorra La Vella parish and Escaldes/Engordany parish - the towns have grown so large over the years that to the visitor it seems like just one town.
The importance of this to you is because parking within the Centre and in any of the "blue" coloured parking places is very expensive. You can parking "over the border" in Andorra La Vella - just 1 minute walk in one of the "Fenners" parking significantly cheaper. Up to you. If you buy stuff from the supermarket inside the centre >40 Euros you can get free parking inside for a couple of hours.

Pizzeria La Piazza
Centrally located pizza place catering mainly to tourists. On sunny days the plaza outside is a pleasant place to eat as it is a pedestrianised area and more or less surrounded by buildings which will provide a break for the wind.
Typical of Iberia however, during working days you will get cars and vans parked in the pedestrianised area nevertheless.

Site to eat homemade but real home. Menu of 11 and 14 € Very nice staff The four stars are for food and staff.

A treasure found in some alleys of Andorra. Since it was Sunday and everything was closed and the truth that the other days we were not eating well in the area. It was getting there, we hesitated because it was a small place with only 4 tables, very familiar atmosphere. Cook an older lady and take care of a girl I guess it will be the daughter. Very friendly and excellent home cooking. And very good price just 13 euros per person, with first, second, salad, bread and dessert.

This is the sort of place you only stumble apon when you've lived somewhere for a while, or get to read a review like this.
Tucked away on a backstreet and not looking particularly inviting for a foreigner you almost certainly would pass this place by. It is called "The orelles (The ears) bar".
Own of my wife's colleges at the local football association told her about this restaurant. A regular of theirs.
It's a tiny place. Never been renovated. Small tables crammed in. It's run by a family originally from Galicia in NW Spain.
If you are a pulpo connoisseur you have to go on Thursday for lunch like we did. Don't know about other days yet - maybe I never will. It is recommended you book on Thursdays so this is a speciality they do.
Very little choice for first plate.. Either tuna bake or pasta soup. Then the pulpo served with the traditional potatoes. Superb. One of the best renditions I ever had. And I've had a lot over the years. €23 for the whole meal each.
There are some basic choices for desert including yogurt or an orange.. yes that's how they keep so slim. If you looking for something bit more exciting.. there is almond cake from Galicia.. Tarta de Santiago de Compostela or the Marto, a sort of flan thing. if you are two.. get both and share as the tart was delicious but a bit dry.

- Pal station suffering from intermittent cable car breakdowns. Replacement bus service from La Massana. This bus service is just one bus going up and down. 30min interval.
- There is a devastating shortage of yellow fever vaccine in the US and other countries. This shortage is not expected to be relieved until late 2018. For travel to countries REQUIRING the vaccine - the traveler should search for the vaccine well before departure.
- Andorra Freeriders - Avalanche report from Arcalis on 16.12.17. - A medium to large (for Andorra in recent years) powder slide was triggered by the 3 or 4th person who had hiked from the lift into the large gully / couloir below Pic d'Arcalis (as far as I'm aware no one was hurt)-There will be nothing but ice and rock in there today!) The general Avi risk is listed by authorities as 2/5 today. However, this is a generalised area view and does not fully consider the effect of the extreme winds...
