      • Volendam
Volendam is a touristic fishermans town in the province Noord Holland near to the IJsselmeer. It is famous for it's old fashioned clothing and wooden shoes and houses are still the way it was 100 years ago. Amongst the Dutch people this town is more famous for its "Palingpop"( in english; "Eal pop music"). Many famous Dutch artists are from this small town. Like "BZN","Maribelle","Jan Smit" and "Nick and Simon". "BZN" scored a big world wide hit in the 70's with the song "Chanson D'Amour". Not very well known, but this band didn't start with making Palingpop, but with hard rock!

Many restaurants and bars are in this town. With special day menu's, but mostly menu's with fish on it. Souvenir stores are there plenty as well. In some you can have photo's made while wearing local traditional clothing, also known as "klederdracht".

While in Volendam you can visit Edam for its cheese, you can go there by bicycle, foot, car or bus. Edam and Volendam are in the same municipality: Edam-Volendam. Amsterdam is nearby as well, but that's only nearby by car or bus. Some Dutch might go there by bicycle, but that's not recommendable for non-Dutchies.

      • Edam
Edam, a small city only a few kilometers away from Amsterdam and the "Droogmakerij de Beemster" (Polder de Beemster). This city is famous because of its cheese and the cheese market. The cheese market was revived in 1989 as a re-enactment for tourists. It is held each July and August on the Wednesdays from 10:30 to 12:30 on the Jan van Nieuwenhuizen Square in front of the "Waag" (weigh house). There are two other cheese markets in the province of Norht-Holland: Alkmaar and Hoorn. But Woerden and Gouda have their own too. Only Woerden is commercial and not re-enacted.

There are a few sites to visit in Edam: the "Grote" or "Sint Nicolaas Kerk" (Big or Saint Nicolas Church, one and the same church with cathedral dimensions), the cheese market, the Dam, and the nearby Edam Museum . This museum was founded in the oldest brick house of Edam. It was built in 1530/40 as a private house. Special feature is the floating cellar which rises or falls with the groundwater level.

When in Edam you can visit Volendam too, their in the same municipality (Edam-Volendam) so it's only a short walk away.

Eam is easily accessible by car and bus.

      • IJmuiden
IJmuiden is a city in the Dutch province of North Holland, the main town of the municipality of Velsen. It lies about 17 km (10.3 mi) north of Haarlem. In the Roman era, this Velsen district was already inhabited, and archeological finds indicate there was a North Sea port of some regional importance built here. The town suffered heavy damage and demolition during World War II, because of its maritime importance.

IJmuiden is a fairly new city in its present form, and only came into existence in the 1870s when the North Sea Canal was dug, connecting the Amsterdam harbors to the open sea. Before the present IJmuiden was built, the area was known as Breesaap; it was a desolate plain where only a handful of farmers strived to make a living. In 1851 the whole area was sold to the entrepreneurs Bik and Arnold, who finally set into motion plans that had been drawn up already since 1626. The first spade hit the ground on April 8, 1865.

The IJmuiden name literally means “mouth of the IJ”, which is a hint to the importance the town has for the Amsterdam harbor. The name “IJmuiden” first appeared as IJ-muiden in lines written in 1848 by the professor and journalist (and, later, a liberal finance minister in the Van Lynden van Sandenburg Cabinet) Simon Vissering. The present IJmuiden form was eventually adopted in 1876, as the North Sea Canal was being completed in this section.

In 1890 it had about 1,500 inhabitants, but boomed when the Koninklijke Nederlandse Hoogovens steelworks settled in IJmuiden. The statistical area IJmuiden, which includes the surrounding countryside, has a population of 30,466. The headquarters of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij is located in IJmuiden.

      • Alkmaar
        Note: Alkmaar has 11 Windmills!

‘Victory began in Alkmaar’. This saying refers to one of the most famous episodes in the history of Alkmaar: its defeat of the besieging Spaniards in 1573. The legacy of this rich and illustrious past is still in evidence in the cosy city centre. The canals with their characteristic drawbridges, the numerous historic buildings, the peaceful squares, the old facades and the narrow shopping streets give the center of the city its very special atmosphere. Girls says Alkmaar is such a great shopping city!

Over the course of the centuries Alkmaar has developed into an medium-sized city. The people of Alkmaar are proud of ‘their’ Canada Square, the sparkling new cultural location where five major cultural institutions present a broad palette of exhibitions, theater, art, music, books and new media. For tourists, too, Alkmaar is a well-loved destination. There is of course the cheese market, that attracts thousands of people from all over the world, but the beach and the capital are both nearby. Alkmaar: cheese, coast, and culture!

Alkmaar is located in a typical Dutch polder landscape, close to a major nature reserve with dunes, beach, woods and water, water everywhere. Few places in the Netherlands have such a wide variety in terms of natural splendour. In addition, Alkmaar is surprisingly close to Amsterdam and Schiphol. So more and more companies are opting for Alkmaar as an attractive location for their activities.

Alkmaar is easily accessible by train from Amsterdam and (city) bus(es).

        • Incredible! Be sure to budget enough time for the whole experience. It is so well done. It's like going back in time. Her story really comes to life. You actually walk through THE secret bookcase. It was our highlight in Amsterdam. Be sure to book tickets early online.
        • You definitely need to purchase your tickets online for your visit ahead of time. Be prepared to spend around 2 hours going through the house. Not because it is that big but the crowds inside flow through the house slowly with all the reading and videos. Well worth a trip though.
        • One of the most affecting places I've ever been, steeped in history and a lesson to current and future generations. The way the tour is designed is quite remarkable, with enough to read, look at and learn as you meander your way through the house into the secret annex. Everybody visiting Amsterdam should take some time to visit the Anne Frank House. Queues in the evening can be extremely long (you don't need to have prebooked a ticket in the evening), but I'd recommend buying a timed entry slot online. It'll take you about 90 minutes to walk around, but every minute is well spent. I'm surprised this doesn't cost significantly more.
        • An unforgettable experience! If you get the opportunity to go, be sure to make a reservation weeks or even months ahead of time. Otherwise, you will end up standing outside in a very long line for several hours. They do a great job at pacing the amount of people so that you get adequate time to walk through slowly and see everything. Once through the annex, you can spend as much time in the museum as you like. Camera use is not allowed nor are large bags due to the cramped space.
        • The Book which captured a time in Life... the Book which, still, is Alive... To walk into time in history, grasp the life and personality, hear the voices... understanding that yesterday's battles are still today's struggles... You cant help but feel nostalgic... Buy tickets in advance as suggested... but waiting in line was definitely worth- You Do Not want to miss this.

        • Best thing to do in Amsterdam!
In November 2016 I was on a solo citytrip to Amsterdam for attending a travelers event. I decided to use the opportunity to visit the Anne Frank Museum. This is basically a biographical museum in the house she used to be hidden. Anyone even a little interested in this story should visit the museum, since you will get to see how she (and her family) lived for years. Personally I don’t only believe it to be the best thing to do in Amsterdam, but it really is a one of the museums that really made a big impression on me. Queues can be very long so book your tickets online and come early!
