Semuc Champey is a Natural Monument located near Lanquin in Guatemala. The park is a steep valley of lush forest with a large rushing river at the bottom. At the throat of the valley the river dives into an underground cave and at the bottom of the valley the river gushes back out. In the center of the valley lay a series of calm, dripping turquoise pools. The roof of the cave creates the pools of Semuc Champey.

Upon entering the park you can go either strait to the pools, or to Mirador, a high look out point. The hike is steep but the view shows the entire valley with the turquoise pools. You can walk to the top of the valley to see where the river dives into the cave, then swim in the pools themselves.

Lanquín, one of the tribes conquered by a group of friars, among them: Fray Pedro Angulo, Fray Luis de cancer and Mr. Rodrigo de la cerda, was based on the year of 1540. Between 1540 and 1550, its first catholic Church was built, the one that was founded with the name of San Agustin.

Originally, this church was made up of ranch straws but later on it catching fire and resulting in a large sum of deaths led to its reconstruction in 1574.This was however possible after a set of Spanish rules and regulations were agreed upon. In 1810, a significant portion of the building was lost to an earthquake after which the current civil market is found on the debris and foundation of what was a piece of the Church.

By presidential agreement of May of the year 1956, Lanquín by its natural beauties and that constitute one of the greater tourist attractions of the country, was declared NATIONAL PARK. In 1970 Lanquín was declared NATIONAL MONUMENT (artistic, tourist. etc.) and in 1997 by presidential agreement was declared CULTURAL PATRIMONY.

        • Hidden gem! Best from 9:00-10:00. Go all day or minimum 2-3 hrs. Don't forget to bring water and snacks but you can buy some if need be from local vendors. Go with a tour or guide if you want to learn all the good jumping places in the pool and don't want to leap alone.
        • Its beautiful! Worth it the trip. Dont miss the mirador! You can stay the whole day there. Its a nature wonder.
        • Beautiful place! Semuc Champey is truly stunning. We walked up to the mirador first, and then went to swim in the pools. There are lockers to leave your stuff, so make sure to bring a padlock.
        • Semuc Champey itself is absolutely incredible! I have been to 35 countries and as far as natural beauty, is one of the most amazing things I have seen in my life. I enjoyed my time here. Highlights include tubing down the river below Semuc Champey, swimming under the waterfalls and, of course, swimming in SC. The hike up to the viewpoint might be hard for some people, so bring a lot of water! The tour guide was pretty good too. Not amazing but not bad either. However, there is ONE DOWNSIDE to this experience: Most people will use Lanquín as a base to further explore Semuc. The issue is the transportation between Lanquín and Semuc (about 8 to 10 km) is horrendous, the worst I have seen in all of my travels. It is dangerous, unethical and disrespectful to all of the paying customers and locals alike to pack them in, like cows, into the back of a pick up truck (everyone standing). The metal bars will hurt your back if you are pressed against the sides as this is a bumpy ride. Any way, from Semuc back to Lanquín I counted THIRTY-THREE people in the back of the truck, many hanging on for dear life, including a child hanging OUTSIDE THE TRUCK. That is what pissed me off the most, the poor kid! How is this ethical in any way or acceptable? It is my hope to bring this to the attention of more people so something can be done about this. Please develop better transportation that is (more) respectable to everyone involved. IF you decided to go to Semuc Champey, totally do it BUT verify with the tour guide or whoever you are talking to that you will not need to use a pick up truck (they WILL be over crowded) as considering the roads, they are dangerous the way they are being used....Demand better transit between the town and Semuc and if they cannot give it to you, walk, find someone else who can.
        • Many different ways of getting here, however, just make it easy on yourself, book through your hostel, save the time of haggling or even doing a 10km walk there The place itself is absolute beauty, with beautiful refreshing water and a viewpoint that gives you an amazing perspective of where you are Highly recommended
