Kirklees College student, currently nearing the end of my second year in IT, and man... what a shitshow. This year has been a struggle for the teachers AND students on this course. The IT department has been horrifically understaffed, and the agency and support teachers that were brought in have made work for us far harder, whether it's taking MONTHS to mark/review our work, or just generally being clueless. Early in the year, there was a ton of timetable and staffing reworks and swaps, making life a nightmare for us. Not to mention, the head of the course itself, has been absent for the entire course of this year, which made everything significantly more chaotic. This is all accompanied with the dreadful support from financial services for students like myself that can't fully afford to buy premium meals for dinner everyday, and the fairly awful support offered from certain Progress Coaches and teachers. All in all, if you're looking for a decent IT course for college in the Huddersfield area, do what I wish I'd done, and go literally anywhere else.

This college is completely reprehensible. Where do I start… the teachers don't teach - they merely hover around the computer for each lesson, acting as if they were child minders. The syllabus is all computer based, with rare, unhelpful inputs from the teachers. As far as I am aware the standard of teaching throughout the college is extremely poor - there might be one or two exceptions to this generalisation, but it would be foolish to think about attending this college based on the teaching quality alone. If you attend Kirklees College you will be treated as if you are a misbehaving child for the duration of your course - despite if you ask to be treated with respect and be treated like an adult. This won't happen. If you are a mature student then get prepared to be thrown into a class full of 17 year olds and be treated like the rest of the class - as if you are a child. Anyone who is considering going to this college should have a SERIOUS rethink and maybe consider going to Calderdale or Barnsley colleges instead. This college will drain any eagerness to learn that you may have and you will get near to the end of your course just wanting to leave already. Greenhead and New College are literally in another league when compared with Kirklees College. So unless you are an immigrant doing ESOL who doesn't mind being treated poorly I really can't recommend this college to anyone. The complete lack of respect for its students is the reason why this college is so bad. Unless things turn around - which I doubt, most teachers would have to be fired for things to change. The only improvement I can recommend to this college is to hire teachers that can actually teach and are not just in the job for the free holidays. You can tell the difference between a teacher who cares about their job and a teacher who is just there to make up the hours. Sad to say most of the teachers in this college really don't care about their job. I've seen kids being failed when all they needed was a little extra help. Instead they were demonised and made to feel like they weren't able to achieve and its this kind of behaviour from the teachers that should not go unnoticed. I am completely shocked and appalled at this college - thank goodness the government pays my fees. I would've been fuming if this was where my tuition money was going!
