  It is difficult to conceive that Portland is the biggest city in Maine with its meager population of perhaps 65,000. Worse yet, its #1 population status does not even merit it being the state capital (that would be Augusta). However, Portland is truly the economic and cultural capital of this beautiful state and it is way too easy to fall in love with this special place, replete with old buildings and history and a continuing reliance upon the sea for much of its productivity.
  
  Doubtless the beauty of the Portland Head Light deserves top billing as the primary destination…but Portland offers so much more! Old Port is an exquisite area, featuring cobblestone streets and stellar shops (this from someone who hates to shop)…I have yet to find another place in the US with such a fantastic collection of art stores! Old Port also features excellent dining opportunities…but even rowdy bars depending on your inclinations.
  
  From the port located downtown you can escape to numerous nearby islands (a really overlooked aspect of Portland), and staying here poises you to experience the other foundations of southern coastal Maine. Freeport is perhaps a half-hour north and Kennebunkport a half-hour south…and there is so much more beyond the wee bit I’ve shared!

  We had thanksgiving dinner here. The food was great, Music was one guy live. Not much interesting, and no one was really paying attenion. Price was a bit high but again the food was great. Real turkey and ham. Not processed breast like many places have.

  There are multiple sites for the Fireside Inn & Suites so be mindful of which one you used. I ended up paying double what they were posting for rates on their actual site and when I brought this to light to the employee at the front desk he didn't seem to care and pretty much told me too bad. I requested a non-smoking room where I had my three year old and my friends four year old with us and our room smelt very strongly of cigarettes. The restaurant was VERY over priced for low quality food and the continental breakfast was nothing special with not much variety, not impressed what so ever with my stay and will never be going back. Rooms were also very outdated and did not look like the pictures that were posted. Nothing special, over priced and dingy. I would NOT recommend staying here.

  they messed up on my check out time and i had to leave a day earlier and sleep on someones couch. there was a party of really old people that got crazy drunk, that was super weird. but the place is very nice, very typical moderate hotel. would be 4 stars if they didnt mess up on my check out day

  Friendly staff and bartender! Pool was very nice on a cold snowy night! Hotel was out dated when it came to everything but the main entrance. Also the cleanliness of the room was very much lacking. Random white stains on the carpet and furniture....I shudder at what it could be.

  Located about 25 minutes from downtown Portland, this was pretty convenient without being as expensive as some other options. The room was very comfortable and clean. No unpleasant surprises. The only negative thing I have to say is, the continental breakfast is not the best. Cereal, oatmeal, muffins, yogurt. Nothing really if you like a more savory breakfast. Of course they want to encourage you to pay for real food at their restaurant.
