    • Portland
A victory for urban planning that hides countless green spaces and easy access to the country amongst a heavy populated center, Oregon’s capital is also known as the ‘City of Roses’, and was – astonishingly – named after developers tossed a coin. Each wanted to name the city after their own hometowns, with the landowner from Portland (Maine) winning a game of luck that prevented Portland form being forever known as Boston instead.

Aiming to be particularly user-friendly, Portland is arguably a better city to live in than it is to visit, especially given artistic draws like ‘First Thursday’ (when the city’s galleries lay on wine and cheese alongside free entry for the public), but there is plenty to see year round, too. You could hardly hear of Portland without learning of the ample microbreweries, with aptly named spots like the Full Sail Brewing Company (from which you can stare across the river while downing your first pint, watching the sails blast past), or the intriguing and European-influenced brews of Widmer Gasthaus - where the scene seems to grow by the day – the perfect spots to sample.

The city’s not without its problems – high unemployment and horrendous traffic not least (take the streetcar to avoid the worst of it) - but the vibe is generally pleasant and welcoming. For the more sedate visitor, the rose gardens, or child-friendly spots like the perfect summer heat-killer the Salmon Street Springs might prove more appealing. The ornate attractions of the Chinese Classical Garden bring a taste of the orient, while the entirely handmade Saturday Market is another tempting local draw.

If you’d prefer to get out of the city, the 200 meter Multnomah Falls make for a scenic picnic spot, while head south-east and you’ll arrive at dozens of vineyards, complete with sample rooms, ideal for exploring on an extensive tour of heading out to under your own steam (don’t forget a designated driver) for a day you’ll be sleeping off all of the following morning.

All in all, Portland – being the only major city for miles – is likely to feature on any major US itinerary, and charms with its pure livability, though it lacks the headline sights you might be looking for in a short trip.
      Portland, OR, USA

      • Recently homeless, needing a decent cheap place for my children and I to crash at.... So I picked this place. Its actually pretty great! Seriously the owner is amazing and the people who work here are very sweet caring people. Yea, the location isn't the best, but its very well taken care of. The rooms make it feel like a nice studio... So all in all great place!
      • This place is a nightmare! I always stay at cheap motels while traveling. I picked this place soley out of location convenience (and because they had a dog friendly room available). The front counter employees were rude, my pillows had pubic hair on them, sheets had crusty stains, TV had snowy reception, it smelled so strong of a detergent (which I don't know why, the place was filthy). My socks were black from walking on the floor without my shoes on. The place is so depressing, they even have a suicide hotline printed on the soap wrapper. I had my dog with me so the man at the front desk wouldn't allow me to switch rooms, telling me that the room I was in, was the last room that was available that you can have a dog in. The man at the front desk in the morning called my room early, yelling at me that I'm not allowed to have a dog in that room! I paid an extra $10 at check in, for the dog fee- just to get woken up with an angry middle Eastern man yelling at me over the phone about having my dog in that room! The room next to me had gotten knocks on the door about every 15-20 minutes through out the night. I figured it was a meth dealer, come to find out that motel is known for being a "prostitution house". The place was terrible. Not worth the $85!! Stay away!! (Unless you want meth, a prostitute, or a place suitable to hang yourself).
      • I have been there for one night and I would not recommend, because everything was clean for appearances' sake. I smelled some strong cleaner in the room, probably to cover up some bad smell. Two men smoked weed right in front of my room. When I looked out the window in the morning, I was shocked, because I saw few people like homeles and junkies. Never again! I'm giving one star only because i cant give zero.
      • I picked up a couple for a ride to a doctor's appointment was great talking with them
      • Good. The cheapest and best place to stay in Portland. Cartlandia is across the street, an epic selection of food trucks with incredible food. Very accessible to everything which is on one huge street. This was the absolute cheapest place to stay we could find. And it was excellent for us and our trip.
