      • Metropolitan City of Rome
A city that was once the heart of the Roman Empire, and now contains an entire tiny country (and the center of Catholicism) within its borders, Rome doesn’t stop there: a mammoth artistic heritage, two of Europe’s biggest football teams and a penchant for high-class fashion are also just waiting to be uncovered.

The Vatican is the place to start, where artwork and shapely architecture seems to appear round every corner. You won’t meet the Pope, but you can climb to the platforms of St Peter’s Basilica and explore the dusty archives of the astonishingly vast Vatican Museum. To get there you’ll walk the cobbled streets from the Tiber, passing old Roman houses before arriving amongst the expansive, symmetrical courtyard in which the Pope waves to the masses from a balcony after first being sworn in.

Try a magnificent climb to the Cupola to see the perfect view of the St. Peter's Square. Roam down the underground Grotto to see the tombs of the Popes and other Roman royalties.

Grab an ice cream, and head over to the sites the other side of the Tiber, which include the magnificent but crumbling Colosseum, the small but beautiful pools of the Trevi Fountain (take some small change to throw in), and the Roman grandeur of countless uncovered ruins and crumbling yet exquisite churches. Think ‘Angels and Demons’ on a far grander scale.

It’s not all about history, though: Rome’s streets are coated with designer brands, while the residents shoot around the streets on stylish motorbikes, pausing only for super-strength coffee and to chomp on slices of perfectly made pizza straight from a window on a street corner. Sitting outside in any one of the many plazas and simply absorbing the vibe, cold beer in hand, is enough to feel at the heart of it.

For the large part Rome is loud and brash, but every bit as charming and invigorating as its reputation would lead you to believe. Try to catch an evening soccer game at the magnificent Stadio Olimpico, or spend your days watching the abundant priests drift down crumbling cobbled streets in their swaying robes amongst nude statues, tiny fountains and perfectly formed buildings. Rome might no longer be the capital of the world, but it is an essential travel experience.

      • Vatican City
Both a country within a city and a city within a country, the Catholic heartland of the Vatican lies entirely within the boundaries of ancient Rome, and is guarded by the heavily trained and garishly clad Swiss Guard. It’s also one of the countries least likely to ask you for your passport on entering, the smallest sovereign state in the world, and perhaps the country with the highest density of tourists compared to residents of any on earth.

The independence of the Vatican is actually relatively new, established in 1929 in an agreement between Mussolini and the Pope which gave the Catholic leadership – at the time a newly landless elite – control of the area around St. Peter’s and the Sistine Chapel, as well as several un-adjoined sites around the city.

Start by trying to find the point on the Piazza where you can see only one row of columns all around you (there are in fact five), before climbing the steps to St. Peter’s, comfortably the largest basilica in the world, and coated with art and monuments painted by the Italian greats, including Michelangelo. Saunter up the dome, and you can stare down over a mighty city panorama, or dip below the high alter on a tour and explore the relics hidden deep below.

The Sistine Chapel – the spot where a new Pope is elected that then becomes his private chapel – is home to more masterpieces from Michelangelo and Boticelli, as well as a sensational assortment of 15th century frescoes, while the Vatican Museum is a selection of treasures gifted to the church, and includes exhibits from Greece and Egypt alongside a startling range of significant Roman art. You could easily wile away hours here; the Vatican on the whole is a simply incredible artistic heartland.

This particular country can be accessed by local bus or subway from the more touristy parts of Rome, and it’s also a massive part of the charm of Italy’s capital. You don’t have to be religious to appreciate the majesty of a destination like this, which resonates with feeling at every turn and stuns with its architecture and art.

        • I am a frequent flyer and this is THE WORST airport I have ever been to. DO NOT fly to this airport under ANY circumstances. Here are the reasons why it's absolutely appalling: 1. Our flight was at 6:30am. We arrived at 3am to check in. The airport was CLOSED. We all had to sit outside in the FREEZING COLD on the floor with no toilets or other facilities available until the airport decided to open. I was pregnant at the time and this was extremely uncomfortable. There was no communication from any of the security guards about when it will open. 2. TWO HOURS LATER the airport finally decided to open.....but guess what! There were NO staff inside manning the check in gates. So again, we had to sit in a queue on the floor for another HOUR AND A HALF till the staff decided to show up. When they did finally show up, they were dressed totally shoddily. Their hair was a mess and their uniforms were half on, half off. We had to wait a further 20 minutes while they fixed their ties and turned on their computers. 3. When we were finally seen, we asked to check in and get our boarding passes (like we do at any other airport without hassle) and the lady told us to get in ANOTHER QUEUE which wouldn't open for ANOTHER HOUR. So we got in that queue and the woman there (who turned up late again and her uniform was a mess) told us we had to PAY 90 EUROS JUST FOR OUR BOARDING PASSES. EVEN THOUGH WE HAD ALREADY PAID FOR OUR FLIGHTS. 4. After all that, she told us we had to GET BACK IN THE ORIGINAL QUEUE to check in and finally get out boarding passes. We were honestly so lucky we didn't miss our flights. 5. When we checked our hand luggage through, there were no attendants to tell us which queue to join, so it was SEVERE CHAOS. NO ORGANISATION WHATSOEVER. There was a severe lack of the boxes to put our stuff in and the process was just a complete mess. 6. When we finally got in yet another queue to board our flight, I went downstairs to use the toilets. The female toilets were one of THE WORST i have ever seen. The seats were all broken so you just had the underneath bit to sit on. The floor was covered in piss and it was so dirty. Needless to say, I did not use them. The entire flight after that was a complete shambles as well but that was due to Ryan Air, not the airport. All I have to say to people who are flying to/from Rome, PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS AIRPORT. If you value your time, money and dignity please please stay away from this airport.
        • We were 40 minutes before The flight at The airport Andrzej were waiting for flight. Queue were very long and we were waiting for it to get smaller. Suddenly The airport im our gate change do we went to The counter to check what's going on. It turns out that our flight got closed and they started boarding another flight. There was no one shouting final call, there was no communication over speakers and there was no information on the screens. We had to pay 100 euro each for new flight do different location than we intended. They were lying to us saying there were communication but 4 of us didn't here a thing. Worst airport I've ever been to!!!
        • An outdated and terrible airport that can't cope with demand. The transport to Rome is absolutely shocking. You have 4 choices: Shuttle Bus: The best option and reasonably priced but they are nowhere near frequent enough so when you get there you are told the next bus is in 2 hours or 90 mins. You then have to join the hundreds of people waiting outside. Taxi: 30 euros to Rome. Fixed price. It's fine I guess but more expensive that most Ryanair flights so what's the point? Public Transport: A cheap option but again...flawed. If you can get the one of the 2 nearby train stations then all is good because it's a €1.50 15 min trip into Rome. Problem is the buses are every 40 mins. There's a huge queue in the terminal for tickets...mainly Italians who know the system. You then have to join a huge queue and hope you can cram in the bus or wait for the next one. I asked a taxi driver how much to the station and he said €25. It's literally 3km!! Walk and train: I took this option after reading a trip advisor post. DO NOT do it. You have to walk on grass through thick bushes at the side of a busy road. It's not fun.
        • Level of service is just ridiculous, shops rip you off, the customer has the electronic passport control which is never switched on. Finally after three years that I've been traveling to the support they decided to offer 1 hour free Wi-Fi
        • Great atmosphere and extremely easy to board. One of my favorite airport.
        • Slick and reasonably professional. OK, we travelled at the end of January not peak season. My wife said most of the toilets were fine and had a restraining seat in each cupboard for a toddler if needed. Took the opportunity to eat, drink and make merry in the good food and bar area before checking in. Enjoyable and not expensive. Friendly Once through check-in and security there is a shop and a small bar. If UK citizen, stay in this area, there's nothing after passport control other than vending machines. Happy travelling. Stay safe.
        • Travelling as a family of 5. Found it easy to navigate and enough food options for the children, gave ourselves plenty of time so no rushing and the airport processes ran very smoothly. WHSmiths on both sides of security. All staff were very polite and helpful. Bus takes you to the plane from the terminal and you have to walk up the stairs but that is common in smaller airports. Got through security quite quickly and there was coffee, croissants waffles, crepes and gelato, also a sandwich bar. Short cues. Had lots of time to get a seat after passport control.I f you want to eat make sure you pick something up before passport control, there are only a couple of vending machines after that.
        • The Airport is comfortable for me. I am giving it 5 stars because the people who work are kind and helpful. It is clean. Buses are helpful to go to the train station. The shops are full of stuff and the airport is less busy than Fiumicino.
        • I'm giving you one star, only because I can not give you less. Minus 5 will suits you perfect. This airport better to be closed. The poorest customer service ever. Rude, unprofessional, unhelpful staff. This is ashamed, because it's giving a very bad face to beautiful Italy. I still can't believe how it's possible people who supposed to serve tourists from all around the world to behave so ugly and disrespectful. I'm very, very disappointed!!! Change the staff or shut it down...
        • Absolutely poor and unacceptable service!! This airport doesn't have a management or if it does it's even worst than all the workers together! Shame on your faces! People asking for information and help with a cancelled flight and they all together making fun of you in your face. Then scaring the people with the police and screaming in our faces, finding it funny as well. People who are not able to do their job and don't have the skills for it must not work there. The level of spoken English is very low as it's an airport it shouldn't be. Never seen something like that... Actions must be taken!
        • Hardly any choice of shops or anywhere to get food. Extremely long queues and minimal seating. Only good thing is that the airport is so small that you won’t get lost.
