Stationed there from May 1968 to December 1972. Loved it!

Stationed here 4/2007 - 4/2011 with the 48th LRS/Vehicle Maintenance Flight. Our sponsor picked us up from Heathrow Airport and quickly got us back to base to check into the Inn. Very strange not to mention scary driving on the left hand side aka the "wrong side" of the road! lol! Experience at RAF Lakenheath was a mixed bag of ups and downs. Weather had to do with some of the "downs." :) For the most part assignment here was great. This base is beautiful but also very busy and loud. :) Fortunately for my wife and I we were able to secure SNCO housing on base after having been living off base/on the waiting list just a little over a year. We lived off base in Lakenheath Village in what used to be military family housing. My wife had her garden gnome stolen from the front yard while we were at Church on Sunday morning believe it or not. A gnome people. The on base housing was the newest housing available at the time over on Bentwaters. It was defiantely worth the wait. Beautiful home. We were actually the second couple to live in that home and it was immaculate. Only the housing in Grand Forks AFB ND were I had been assigned to next topped it due to square footage/design offered to SNCOs there. Now that I am retired we miss the travel. While expensive, we took advantage of the great travel deals via the bases MWR office. We traveled to Spain, Paris. Wife really loved Paris. :) Visited York, Roman Baths and Stonehenge. London actually was our first trip before we headed over to Spain/Paris. Had to go see all the typical tourist stops such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, London Bridge, the Tower of London, the Tames River etc... The wife and I were surprised when we arrived at Stonehenge. Stonehenge appeared so much bigger on television. lol! I guess you can probably say that about most anything. lol! Yes folks, RAF Lakenheath was a great experience both personal and professional.

Stationed at Lakenheath in 72-73. Great base and country . Favorite places were Cambridge and London. Loved hearing the fighters go over and watch the flightline. It is so much bigger now.
