      • Cancún
Built almost from scratch in the 70's with the aim of competing with Acapulco as a world-class resort, Cancun has certainly succeeded. In fact, Cancun has surpassed it's aims and now brings in quite literally millions of visitors per year. It’s glossy, arguably cultureless depending, of course, on your perspective on the kind of shipped-in culture resorts attract, and utterly overbears the tiny fishing village you’d have found here had you turned up a few decades ago.

Of course, if what you’re after is a pampering, the chance to lie on the beach, and plenty of cocktails in your expansive hotel pool, then you might well have picked the perfect spot. Sun is all but guaranteed, the beaches really are phenomenal, and Cancun is a great place to do very little on a fairly substantial budget or a tiny one, if you don’t mind hanging in hotels full of American spring break style binge drinkers.

If you do have enough of the beachside luxury, there are more and more other options cropping up around Cancun. The Selvatica Canopy Adventure, for example, gives you the chance to swim in a sinkhole and fly through the jungle on a zip line. Offshore, numerous companies will take you diving into the depths, to explore wrecks or splash around with whale sharks, and PADI qualifying courses are up for grabs too. For those who can’t quite handle the deep blue, you can always stare down at the glittering colors from the surface with a snorkel, or absorb yourself in an easy access multitude of water sports.

Head into the jungle on an off road vehicle, watch gymnasts and cirque de soleil performances, or explore one of the few ancient cultural options Cancun can boast, the mangrove engulfed El Ray Ruins, that date backs to the 10th century and contains numerous buildings, glyphs and fading paintings, not to mention plenty of resident iguanas and peacocks.

Not all beaches, but what Cancun really boils down to is condensed, sunny luxury. Not that there’s anything inherently wrong with that, but this purpose built beach city is unlikely to satisfy the culture vulture style traveler.

      • Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos, unlike most of the Mayan Riviera, remains a sleepy little fishing village perfectly suited for lounging on the beach, grabbing a bite to eat in the dusty little village square or enjoying the excellent diving and fishing in the area.

Lots of American ex-pats wander around and overall, Puerto Morelos feels a bit like going back in time. Situated right off the main highway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos remains an isolated get away spot that is well worth visiting.

      • Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres (Island of Women) is a small island 8 miles off the Yucatan Peninsula. No one knows the origin of the island’s name but there are several theories including: a pilgrimage sight for ancient Mayan women; a tribute to the Mayan Goddess Ix Chel (a ruin to Ix Chel is on the island); because of the countless statues of women found on the island by Spanish explorers; and because pirates used to stash their women here.

A passenger ferry at Puerto Juarez, north of Cancun departs for the island every 30-mins. It operates from about 6 AM to 10PM. Cost is $4 US with ample room for your bags. About should always be used for everyone is on island time. Numerous small boat operate out of the same docking area. They are faster, however don't use them during periods of high wind as it can get pretty rocky. They should cost about $15 US per person. A car ferry leaves from Punta Sam. Punta Sam is a little NE of Puerto Juarez. They make 5 or 6 trips per day based on demand. Hours are about 8AM to 8PM.

Isla Mujeres is a small fishing village has a slow and relaxed pace – especially compared to Cancun. Attractions include Punta Sur, with a sculpture garden, small Maya temple, and the Cliff of the Dawn (the eastern-most point in Mexico). El Garrafon National Underwater Park is also located at the south end of the island. Several dive shops are available to lead scuba excursions to the many excellent dive locations around the island, and trips can also be booked to Contoy Island, a bird sanctuary.

        • Cancun is a place that's affordable to fly into. I would probably be there one weekend a month if it wasn't such a hassle to get in and out of the airport. When you arrive, you can't take a regular taxi. It has to be a special shuttle service. You can't even call a taxi for pickup. You're forced to support their monopoly. Then for the next hour you will be in a van with other travelers dropping each one off, one by one. And when you finally reach your drop off, you lost half your day and owe a tip on top of the overpriced fare you already paid. And who carries cash in 2016? I didn't have cash and was sent down this long guilt trip by the driver (even after it took two hours to get to my drop off.) I will say that all the airport staff I came in contact with were very helpful and friendly, especially compared to the airports in the United States. I think I would go back there if they get Uber, otherwise there's hundreds of other destinations to go to..
        • They are pretty amazing at handling the volumes. However. . Once the tipping point of too many is reached. .. it's mayhem. Pray you have express prority check in. And boarding the planes... it's a free for all. Blamed mostly on people who can't follow simple directions or wait their turn, the gate staff should enforce rules to keep order. . ** Updated December 2017. Terminal 4 renovations were done and kudos! Huge bus transfer area with sun cover, pleasant smelling, and streamlined. Customs is the exact same unfortunately, but once through there - it's a breeze!
        • Airport is very modern, clean and organized with signs in multiple languages and information kiosks. Does not take very long to get through security, just remember to have your Travel Visa and make sure it is undamaged. If it is damaged, you will have to get an official stamp that will take extra time. Also be aware that if your gate changes you will not be notified. I repeat, no one will tell you so I recommend that you check it’s still the right place before boarding or you might be running through the airport. The Duty tree shops are large and feature tobacco, alcohol and chocolate as well as designed goods.
        • The overall design of the airport is terrible. Travel from terminal to terminal is done by bus, driven by people who apparently have never exercised a calm foot on the gas/brake petals, through an inefficient maze of roads connecting the terminals. Had I not shown up really early, this might have made me late to my flight like multiple people on my bus. Update: Check-in printers were down, so they had to write my boarding pass on paper. Me: "That's not going to cause any problems down the line. /s" Airport security promptly wastes 15 minutes of my time trying to figure out the authenticity of my boarding pass. Also, no wifi unless you want to pay for it. Cool!
        • Very expensive shops, but the Airport is a lot nice than when we were here 7 years ago or so. There are some great restaurants, including Guy Fieri's which again was expensive but nice. Washrooms can get very busy and there were some big lines at the convenience stores. The duty free shops are large and well sorted. The lines at the scanners were quite busy, but the processed us pretty quickly
