Points of Interest near Big Sky Lodge

Looking for important things or something to do or a place to go see near Big Sky Lodge? Here is our list of options.

    Filter By Tags:

    • Rapid City

Rapid City is perhaps best-known for Mount Rushmore National Memorial, which is just a few minutes outside the city. The four granite faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt were begun in 1927 and completed in 1941. The presidential tribute, combined with the natural beauty of the surrounding Black Hills and the outdoor recreation it supports, has helped to make Rapid City a vacation destination.

It is the biggest city located in Western South Dakota. You can find lodging options such as for family and private mountain small houses with a huge variety. Also, there are restaurants which run the gamut from national franchises to local eateries. There are a number of ethnic dining venues, which include Japanese, East Asian and Mediterranean, and many restaurants specialize in local fare, including buffalo burgers and roast pheasant. The northern shopping district is anchored by a mall and big box stores, while historic downtown is marked by boutiques and art galleries.

There also are a number of free or low-cost family activities around town, from museums and gold-rush-era historic sites to a fantasy theme park and animal safaris. Interstate 90 runs through the city, and many visitors use it to link Rapid City with a vacation to Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks to the west. You can get straight flights from the Regional airport of the Rapid City to the locations such as Denver, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Chicago, Denver, Salt Lake City, Phoenix and Chicago.

    • Sturgis
Although nearby Bear Butte was an important landmark for pioneers and prospectors entering the Black Hills beginning in 1875, a permanent settlement wasn't established at Sturgis until 1878, when the U.S. Army constructed Fort Meade at the crossroads as the new home of Seventh Cavalry. As entrepreneurs moved in to supply the new military installation - particularly by building general stores, brothels and saloons - the city of Sturgis was born.

Today, Sturgis is best-known as the home of the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, a global gathering of bikers that happens each year during the first full week of August. Begun in the depths of the Great Depression, the rally has grown to become one of the largest in the world, regularly attracting about 500,000 people from all over the world, several major bike manufacturers and a week of big-name concerts.

However, the other virtues of this otherwise sleepy town are often forgotten in the shadow of the Rally. Bear Butte, which rises 1,253 feet above the surrounding prairie, continues to overlook the community. Now a state park, the distinctive mountain is excellent for hiking, and is revered as a holy site by many American Indian tribes. Although nearby Fort Meade is mostly decommissioned (a VA hospital still remains), the bulk of the post's territory is now a recreation area, with several trails crossing historical features (such as the post's former cemetery and barracks).

      • Very clean, and the friendliest service. My pup(Pembroke Welsh Corgi) Bean and I stayed just one night, but the bed was comfortable, the view of the city at night beautiful, and loved that it felt a little out of the way from the bustle of the city. Funny story, I accidentally locked my keys in my car, and the owner was nice enough to lend me a coat hanger to fish my keys out! Got to meet their puppy briefly, and it was so great how nice they were to Bean and accepting of her presence throughout the premises! There is a hot tub and seating area overlooking the city as well, though Bean and I did not find the time or energy to take advantage. Definitely would book again for the next trip out!
      • I absolutely loved it there. The wonderful service was, wonderful! The people there were SO nice! As soon as we got there a very nice lady who explained everything! The beds, I don't know why, but they were the most comfortable beds! The view from the Jacuzzi was beautiful. The breakfast was yummy, my personal favorite was the cinnamon rolls! It was worth it. The price was less then a chain hotel, even though it was better! I went here with my dad, and I would go 100 more times!
      • This was our final stop before heading home. Connie was very welcoming at check in and walked us to our door. Very nice and friendly! Room was clean and nice. Beds a bit hard, but not awful at all. Great view and wish we would have had time to use the hot tub on the deck! Met Jay in the morning after a nice continental breakfast! He was also very nice! It was like we were family visiting! Thank you!!
      • Super laid back clean lodge with great views just a click out of town. Jay the owner is gem among gems. He has more knowledge of the parks and sites then any book or website you will find. His whole staff mirrors this making for a mom and pop feel you just don't find that much of.
      • This place was absolutely lovely. It was everything we needed after driving the whole night through. The price wasn't bad at all and they allowed us to bring our 6month old German shepherd without a hassle. The bed was SO cozy along with the rest of the room. It even had a hot tub with a spectacular view. We soaked our aching bones while watching a lightening storm far off. The staff was so incredibly friendly it felt like we were staying with close relatives. If you're staying in Rapid City stay here! It was way better than any Best Western.
