• Berkeley

  Berkeley although begun well before, was incorporated back in 1878 and has grown along with the area, especially due to the University of California at Berkeley. It is widely known as a liberal refuge for crazy hippies, but it also has much more to offer. The University of California at Berkeley is the top public university in the United States and was the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement.
  
  Berkeley is also the birthplace of "California Cuisine", which places an emphasis on fresh, locally grown and raised ingredients. As such, it has some of the best restaurants in the country, including Chez Panisse, which was named the best restaurant in America in 2001 by Gourmet Magazine. Durant cafe has the been fresh-squeezed orange juice in the entire city!
  
  South Berkeley is mainly inhabited by university students and has a grittier, urban feel. North Berkeley and the Berkeley hills are more upscale in comparison, and mainly inhabited by graduate students, professors, and long-term residents.
  
  It’s proximity to San Francisco, Oakland, and Silicon Valley make it an ideal location.

• Oakland

  Located on the Eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay, Oakland is often known as "The Other City by the Bay". With a population of over 415,000, Oakland is the 8th largest city in California. Temperatures are mild with summertime highs averaging in the mid 70s and winter temperatures in the mid fifties.
  
  Despite boasting several affluent neighborhoods, and many very safe ones, Oakland has yet to escape the stigma of its crime rate. However, Oakland is also a diverse and interesting city, with attractions including the Jack London Square waterfront, Lake Merrit, the Chabot Space and Science Center, and Chinatown. Oakland is also well known for its sports teams. The Athletics (baseball), Raiders (football), Golden State Warriors (basketball), and the Slammers (basketball) all draw large crowds.
  
  Oakland is the home to many cultural events, including an international film showcase, and Greek, Mexican and Chinese festivals. According to the 2000 US Census, Oakland is one of the two most diverse cities in the United States, with over 150 languages spoken. Maybe the cultural clashes add to the high crime rate.

  Customer service was friendly. Even though the hotel was expensive by my standards, it offered the best rates in the neighborhood. Hotel itself wasn't good. You could hear other guests through the walls. The smell of weed leaked through the vents, and the place didn't present much professionalism. I would not stay another night.

  I booked a regular room. I show up and all they have is smoking rooms

  For the money you pay on the room it's sad. Small rooms, no television channels. There were stains on the bedding and the carpets were filthy. NO PARKING. We were told to park on the street where posted signs said one hour parking from 9 to 6 pm. The only positive thing I could tell you is the shower had hot water...other than that I would recommend you pay 20 dollars more and stay at the Hilton Garden! !!!

  This was a mistake to stay here. We went with a low price because we were only going to come in late and leave early the next day. The room is nothing like advertised, no coffee maker, hair dryer, ironing board, iron. Nothing. When I brought up the things that were missing, that the website said we could expect in each room, the "gentleman" at the front desk (who said he was not the owner) made no attempt to rectify any of this and told me to go somewhere else. Small and run down, filthy, brown stain on the wall right by the head of the bed, old CRT TV had white lines through the picture, had to make the phone work to call, but he did not answer anyway. Oh, and the cooling fan stopped working about 3am, it became a hot box after that. Parking was stupid tight and not enough of it. It is obvious the owner and his "manager", did not care at all about guest comfort or experience. Just say no to this place. I wish I could give it a 1/4 star. Bad all around......
