  To be honest, I think that anymore, I'd rather donate to other organizations. Below is my story. Many years ago, when I was a freshman at Baylor University, I wrote a research paper for an English class on the persecution of Christians by Communist governments. It was inspired by DcTalk's / VOM's "Jesus Freaks". I majored in Russian and studied Chinese at Baylor, and I am a little bit familiar with some of the effects communism can have on Christians. It is one of several ideologies that can sometimes conflict with Christianity, although a lot of that seems to be due primarily to Communist leaders not understanding that Christianity is not really a threat to ethical secular governments. While I myself haven't been a huge donor to VOM, I have for a long time viewed VOM with respect, believing the organization to be one that supported Christians who have been persecuted for the faith (although I have not received many of their publications in a long time and did not think to use discernment when we may have). Anyway, I am writing this review, because I recently received notice of the suicide of former VOM director Tom White, apparently in light of an investigation on him for child molestation. I was also informed of alleged mishandling of donations. I received notification around late-ish July 2017, not prior to that. I have done what I can to investigate the claims and complaints related to VOM, and I have come to the conclusion that I myself am concerned. If you look at the satellite imagery on Google, the VOM complex looks very large. It would seem to me that VOM would do better to have smaller offices in numerous states, with the primary emphasis on helping persecuted Christians, most of whom are probably abroad. For me, VOM no longer reporting an IRS 990 is a red flag. There needs to be more transparency with regards to where donations go. I am also concerned that VOM may not be doing much to submit to outside reviews, with regards to allegations of child abuse. I know from previous church experiences that church leaders can live double lives if they want to. That's not to say that that's what happened, but we don't know. When that is the case, church groups can choose to bring that to the light, or assist in covering up known crimes and abuses. And when that is not the case, a church group should have nothing to fear, so long as the authorities do their job ethically and correctly. There is no reason why you would not want ethical authorities and / or outside reviewers verifying that there has been no problem. Churches and church groups should not keep known problems in house. The Church is not Las Vegas. What happens in church, when it comes to abuse and crimes, should not stay in church. As the Scriptures point out, it should be exposed and brought to the light. That is how you keep the Church healthy. However, the response so far from VOM leaves me unimpressed. Now, that said, I personally still would rather donate to local charities and churches where I live, and work with local churches to assist persecuted Christians abroad -- possibly personally -- so that there be little question that my money and efforts would actually be going to benefit persecuted believers. I simply believe that to be a better way to handle things, but that's my $0.02, fwiw.
