      • Portland
A victory for urban planning that hides countless green spaces and easy access to the country amongst a heavy populated center, Oregon’s capital is also known as the ‘City of Roses’, and was – astonishingly – named after developers tossed a coin. Each wanted to name the city after their own hometowns, with the landowner from Portland (Maine) winning a game of luck that prevented Portland form being forever known as Boston instead.

Aiming to be particularly user-friendly, Portland is arguably a better city to live in than it is to visit, especially given artistic draws like ‘First Thursday’ (when the city’s galleries lay on wine and cheese alongside free entry for the public), but there is plenty to see year round, too. You could hardly hear of Portland without learning of the ample microbreweries, with aptly named spots like the Full Sail Brewing Company (from which you can stare across the river while downing your first pint, watching the sails blast past), or the intriguing and European-influenced brews of Widmer Gasthaus - where the scene seems to grow by the day – the perfect spots to sample.

The city’s not without its problems – high unemployment and horrendous traffic not least (take the streetcar to avoid the worst of it) - but the vibe is generally pleasant and welcoming. For the more sedate visitor, the rose gardens, or child-friendly spots like the perfect summer heat-killer the Salmon Street Springs might prove more appealing. The ornate attractions of the Chinese Classical Garden bring a taste of the orient, while the entirely handmade Saturday Market is another tempting local draw.

If you’d prefer to get out of the city, the 200 meter Multnomah Falls make for a scenic picnic spot, while head south-east and you’ll arrive at dozens of vineyards, complete with sample rooms, ideal for exploring on an extensive tour of heading out to under your own steam (don’t forget a designated driver) for a day you’ll be sleeping off all of the following morning.

All in all, Portland – being the only major city for miles – is likely to feature on any major US itinerary, and charms with its pure livability, though it lacks the headline sights you might be looking for in a short trip.

        • Been trying to get an account @simple for over a week. ID verification kept failing over and over with no explanation. Tried the same scans of my passport and driver's license that I've used for every other bank and government agency successfully for years, but strict, particular Simple says the corners are cut off. What a concept, call the customer if there's a problem that's going to cost the customer time or money. Don't tell me on the phone when I finally call in pissed a week later that I should have called sooner, and that I should call sooner in the future if there's a problem! I was really hoping Simple would be different; simple banking is certainly desirable in today's complicated world. But they're just like every other bank that makes the customer jump through hoops to get simple things done! Not off to a good start people. Update 1: My account was approved today! It took almost two weeks. They say it will take another two weeks for my debit card to arrive. We'll see. Bumping up to three stars from one. Looking forward to testing the goals feature with a 50/20/30 budget. Update 2: I keep running into roadblocks with Simple. They told me rather sternly and suddenly "The bank reserves the right to close accounts which are used as business accounts without further notice." Gee thanks for that. Hello, it IS a personal account and I AM using it for personal activities. Just by linking it to my external business checking at another bank to make an electronic transfer, which is how I pay myself, they consider that a business activity which violates their account agreement by turning it into a business account? If that's true, there are a lot of personal accounts out there that have actually become business accounts without people realizing. Electronic transfers must be like a business account zombie, one bite and your personal account magically becomes a business account! They said I'd have to write myself checks and take a photo with the mobile app or do direct deposit instead. Weird. Not sure why electronic transfers are treated differently. In any case, Simple is trying to make certain all their customers are perfect people who do everything perfectly and live in a perfect world. It's a nice dream but in attempting to achieve it, Simple has to be very strict with their customers. They've made me feel stupid three times now in as many weeks, and it has left me feeling less than pleased. Update 3: Having problems again with the account setup, this time for my wife. We went in to the one and only Simple physical branch in existence and was turned away. Shockingly, we discovered that they do not provide any customer support whatsoever at their bank. What the **** Simple? In my whole life I've never walked into a bank that didn't have someone who could help me open an account. You want more customers or not? Apparently not. They again told me to call their phone number, because "that really is the best way" according to the sleepy Millennial who came down to explain how this newfangled bank works. It seems their entire business revolves around customers calling that phone number and using their app. Well what happens when that number stops working and the app won't login and the debit card gives an error? Where can customers go to withdraw their money when there's a run on the banks? Nowhere. Poof. It's all gone.
        • If I could give this a negative star I would. This was the worst banking experience I have ever had. I signed up with Simple and successfully went through the identity verification process. I received my card and was able to access my account for about a week. On the 7th day of having access to my mobile banking account, I generated a transfer into my Simple account from an external bank account for quite a bit a money. Almost instantly I received a message telling me that my account is now locked and the funds are frozen because they needed to "verify" my account further and that I wouldn't have access to the money unless I gave them the exact documents they requested. One of the documents I did not have, so I called customer service to get a little more clarification as I had never experienced all of this with any other bank. Upon calling I dealt with some very unpleasant people who were unsure about Simple's online process even though they were customer service. I was given the run around several times and decided to ask my external bank to try and get my money back. I sent several messages to the Simple representative who specifically requested documentation and was completely ignored. It is now almost two weeks later and the representative finally decided to respond to me saying that there wasn't anything they could do unless I got them exactly what they asked for.Had my external bank not been able to pull the funds back, I would've lost all of my money. I've never had to go through this with any other banks I've worked with. Let this be a warning to not trust Simple with your money no matter how much they advertise to be a very customer service oriented and operationally sound bank.
        • Simple has changed the way I spend and safe my money. I hate the word budget; but Simple is different. It's easy. I finally have a handle on my finances. Couldn't have done it without Simple.
        • Absolutely the worst company to do business with. Avoid this company at all costs.
        • Excellent customer service. No fees very convenient bank
